Decluttering Tips for Seniors: Simplifying Your Home

As we age, a clutter-free home is essential for both safety and comfort. Over time, it’s easy to accumulate belongings, but too many items can make it hard to move around or even downsize. Here are some simple tips to help seniors start decluttering and create a more organized home.

Start Small
Decluttering the entire house can feel overwhelming. Begin with just one room, like the kitchen or bedroom. Tackling one area at a time makes the process more manageable and helps build momentum.

Create Sorting Piles
When sorting through items, make three piles: keep, throw out, and donate. This system helps seniors assess what they need and what can go. Unsure about something? Make a “maybe” pile to revisit later.

Remove Hazards
Safety is key. Start by removing tripping hazards such as old rugs, broken furniture, or unused appliances. For seniors with mobility challenges, a hazard-free home is critical to prevent falls.

Test Unused Items
For items that haven’t been used in a while, try the 90-day test. Set these items aside and, if they aren’t needed after 90 days, it’s time to let them go. This helps narrow down what’s truly important.

Get Rid of Duplicates
Check for duplicate items, such as extra mugs, towels, or tools. Keep only what’s necessary and declutter the rest to free up space.

Organizing everything in the home is key to maintaining a clutter-free environment. Ensure that frequently used items are easy to access, making daily tasks simpler and more manageable. We all need a helping hand sometimes, and at SilverCare Concierge, our goal is to support you or your loved one in living independently, with less worry about the challenges of everyday life.
